Cloud security is important, but what does it really mean ...

John?Boitnott is a longtime digital media consultant and advisor to StartupGrind.

Cloud computing is one of the most valuable innovations for business, providing cheap, virtual services that once required expensive, local hardware. ?We place almost everything in the cloud, but what do we really know about its security? ?How do we protect ourselves and our privacy from being compromised?

Fears over cloud security were not assuaged last year when Dropbox, a popular online cloud storage platform, was hacked yet again. ?This attack resulted in unauthorized access to employee accounts containing personal information of users, and spam being sent to users? personal folders. There have been other slightly more embarrassing security controversies for the term dropbox, but we won?t go there.

Despite the risks, most businesses are already using multiple cloud services to handle a myriad of business operations. ?The cloud is only going to become more important to us, and we must find ways to protect our data while getting the high quality performance we need. A large part of performance means adequate security. A cloud storage provider should tell you if your passwords are not strong enough, for example. Consumers and businesses alike should take the time to ask real questions and assess whether their cloud storage provider is taking security seriously.

According to Steve MacLellan, senior vice president of enterprise architecture for financial services of Fidelity Technology Group, when it comes to security there is no way to understand the cloud storage market until you investigate.

When it comes to cloud security, be aware that:

  1. The only way to stay abreast is to ask clear and direct questions about security policies if you cannot locate the information online. Take ownership.
  2. When possible, look for information about the actual location of the cloud server. Taking this step will help you to be sure that physical security measures are appropriate.
  3. Username and password security are among the chief vulnerabilities, but more and more companies are trusting encryption measures.
  4. You can enhance cloud security by using the correct industry standard encryption and authentication protocols, such as IPsec, before transferring data to the cloud.

The best cloud storage services place the customer in control of their files, not the service provider. This means the customer controls when their files are encrypted and decrypted. This works best because it bypasses the human element ? it means there are no policies, protocols, or authorizations that can be circumvented. Services, such as Wuala, ?encrypt data on the client-side and their employees have extremely limited access to clients? files. Another example of a company promoting secure cloud storage is Bitcasa. The company encrypts your files for you before they are uploaded to the cloud, and keeps three copies of all data in storage for durability. To further protect your files, Bitcasa stores your data as encrypted blocks, not files, so only the user?s authentication can reconstruct the random blocks back into files.

Very few people take a moment to consider the security of where they put their data. According to the recently released Security of Cloud Computing Users Study, only half of those surveyed said that they examine the cloud security features of the services they use. Wow! It gets worse, over 50% of those surveyed are completely confident in the security of their cloud services.

These results mean that to put forward the best cloud security posture, a business needs to institute protocols for the use of cloud storage services to keep all employees on the same system. ?When in the market for a service, businesses must take responsibility and be sure to inquire into all the details of the security features provided. ?Find out if a service has received any awards or certificates such as the Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge.

When it comes to security, transparency is key. A cloud storage company should show that it takes security seriously. Companies should clearly explain the protection measures they take to secure the information they are entrusted with.

Ideally, client data should be encrypted before it is uploaded to the cloud, so that only the user can decrypt the data. Services such as Bitcasa, Open Drive, and Egnyte provide plenty of information about ?their secure cloud storage, and guarantee encrypted data transfer and redundant storage. It?s your data, compute carefully!

Rail chief blames engineer in deadly Quebec crash

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) ? The head of a U.S. railway company whose oil-laden train crashed into a Quebec town, exploding and killing at least 15 people, blamed the accident on an employee who he said had failed to properly set the brakes.

Edward Burkhardt, president and CEO of Rail World Inc., made his comments Wednesday during his first visit to Lac-Megantic, where some 60 people remain missing following Saturday's fiery crash. He arrived with a police escort and was heckled by angry residents,

He said a train engineer has been suspended without pay.

"I think he did something wrong ...We think he applied some hand brakes but the question is did he apply enough of them," Burkhardt said. "He said he applied 11 hand brakes, we think that's not true. Initially we believed him, but now we don't."

The unmanned, Rail World-owned Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway train broke loose early Saturday and hurtled downhill through the darkness nearly seven miles (11 kilometers) before jumping the tracks at 63 mph (101 kph) in Lac-Megantic, near the Maine border, investigators said. All but one of the 73 cars were carrying oil. At least five exploded.

Rail dispatchers had no chance to warn anyone during the runaway train's 18-minute journey because they didn't know it was happening, Transportation Safety Board officials said.

At a press conference, Quebec Premier Pauline Marois faulted the company's response to the disaster.

"We have realized there are serious gaps from the railway company from not having been there and not communicating with the public," Marois said.

Burkhardt said that he had stayed in Chicago to deal with the crisis in his office, where he was better able to communicate with insurers and officials in different places during what he described as 20-hour work days.

Quebec police inspector Michel Forget said they were pursuing a wide-ranging criminal investigation but had ruled out terrorism as a cause. Forget said an array of possibilities are under investigation, including criminal negligence. Other officials have raised the possibility that the train was tampered with before the crash.

"This is an enormous task ahead of us," Forget said. "We're not at the stage of arrests."

The heart of downtown is being treated as a crime scene and remained cordoned off.

At the center of the destruction is the Musi-Cafe, a popular bar that was filled at the time of the explosion, which also forced about a third of the town's 6,000 residents from their homes. By Tuesday, about 800 were still barred from returning to their houses.

Efforts continued to stop waves of crude oil spilled in the disaster from reaching the St. Lawrence River, the backbone of the province's water supply.

Investigators were looking closely at a fire on the train less than an hour before it got loose while parked in the nearby town of Nantes.

The train's engine was shut down ? standard operating procedure dictated by the train's owners, Nantes Fire Chief Patrick Lambert said. Burkhardt had suggested earlier that shutting off the locomotive to put out the fire might have disabled the brakes.

The accident has thrown a spotlight on MMA's safety record. Over the past decade, the company has consistently recorded a much higher accident rate than the national average in the U.S., according to data from the Federal Railroad Administration.

Last year, the railroad had 36.1 accidents per million miles traveled by its trains. The national average for 2012 was 14.6.

Before Saturday's accident, the company had 34 derailments since 2003, including one death, according to the federal agency. The severity of those incidents is difficult to determine from the agency's 10-year data overviews on railroad safety.

Burkhardt said the figures were misleading.

"This is the only significant mainline derailment this company has had in the last 10 years. We've had, like most railroads, a number of smallish incidents, usually involving accidents in yard trackage and industry trackage," he told the CBC earlier this week.

Philippine bishops are not troublemakers, says new president

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) will vigorously maintain its stand on various social issues, including its opposition to a controversial law introduced last year that allows birth control, its new president said today

Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan stressed, however, that the bishops are not "social troublemakers, rally organizers, or a lobby group," but are "conscience troublemakers" and "Christ's followers."

The country's bishops, who are in Manila for their annual plenary assembly, held a Mass today to show their support for petitioners against the Reproductive Health Law who were scheduled to argue their case before the Supreme Court later in the day.?

Villegas said his election on Sunday was "unexpected," adding that "I don?t think any bishop would wish to be elected as president" of the conference.

"We in the Church, when we are given a position it does not make us taller, it just gives us longer hands so we could embrace more people," he said in an interview today.

Being president of the collegial body does not make one powerful, he said, adding it is different from being head of a school or of government.

"The president of CBCP is at the service of the bishops, so whatever the bishops say it is the duty of the president to listen and go to in that direction," he said.

The 52-year old prelate will formally assume his post on December 1.

The CBCP president and vice-president are elected for two-year terms and are traditionally re-elected for a second and final term.

Incumbent Archbishop Jose Palma, however, chose not to be re-elected so he could spend more time preparing for the International Eucharistic Congress in 2016 in his archdiocese of Cebu.?

Researchers say new development could give artificial skin a wider range of senses

We've seen a number of efforts to build a better artificial skin, or "e-skin," over the years, and a team of researchers from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology now say they've made a breakthrough that could lead to some of the most sensitive e-skin yet. The key development is a new type of flexible sensor that would not only allow the artificial skin to detect touch, but humidity and temperature as well. Those sensors are comprised of gold-based nanoparticles that are just five to eight nanometers in diameter and laid on top of a substrate -- in their research, the scientists used PET, the type of plastic you'd normally find in soda bottles. That substrate conducts electricity differently depending on the way it is bent, which means researchers can adjust its sensitivity just by increasing its thickness. As you might expect, this is all still in the early stages, but the researchers see plenty of possibilities for the future, from bringing a sense of touch to artificial limbs to using the same technology to monitor stress on bridges.

How To Buy And Rent Commercial Properties - Maynas Eric

It is true that commercial investment tends to be more profitable than residential property investment. Finding the right opportunity is not easy. Therefore, the following tips will make it easier for you to get good deals in commercial real estate.

Take note that commercial transactions take more time, they are complex and they take more involvement than home purchases are. If you want things made easier, you might want to change what you?re getting yourself into. The fact is that commercial real estate brings in a higher return, therefore the process must be more intense.

In the beginning, a great deal of time might be required to spend on your investment. First you will need to find a property that you think is worth purchasing, and you may have to remodel or repair it. Even though this work takes time, don?t lose heart! You may need to spend some time researching before buying your commercial real estate purchase, but it will pay off in the end.

TIP! Prior to investing massive sums of money in a property, take a hard look at community income averages, as well as employment rates, and how much hiring and firing nearby businesses are doing. Think about what locations are near where you are thinking of buying.

When you are picking between commercial properties, think big! Financing may be no more difficult for the large apartment building than the small one. Just think about it as the more you buy the lower you are paying per unit, so you save more in the end.

Always have an inspector look over your commercial property before you put it out on the market. Listen carefully to the inspector?s report so that you can immediately repair any problems.

When selling commercial property, advertise locally and outside of your region. Most individuals make the error of thinking that only the people in their area are the ones interested in purchasing their property. Many private investors are interested in cheap or affordable properties in other areas of the country or world.

TIP! Whether you want to rent or lease, you will have to deal with pest control. You should make inquiries regarding pest control procedures, particularly if you plan to lease somewhere that is known for insect or rodent infestations.

Assess what you need before you look for commercial properties. You should list the most important things that you are looking for, such as space, restrooms, conference rooms, etc.

The new space you purchase might need some upgrades and repairs prior to occupation. It could be as simple as a coat of paint or replacing some carpet. Oftentimes, moving walls and other fixtures is required to redistribute the floorplan. Negotiate in advance who pays for these improvements or try to get the landlord to pay for at least a portion of the costs.

There isn?t just one type of broker for commercial real estate. Full service brokers work with both landlords and tenants and there are agents representing tenants only. A broker who works only with tenants should have more experience and should represent a better choice for you.

TIP! If you are planning to rent your commercial properties once you purchase them, opt for solidly constructed buildings that are simple in their design. These buildings give off an appearance of being well-maintained and are more inviting to potential tenants.

If you are just getting started investing, focus on just one category of investments. Find one property type to focus on and devote your undivided attention to it. Generally speaking, you?ll maximize your profit if you first become an expert in a single property type rather than a dabbler in many.

Consider all of the tax benefits when planning on commercial property investment. Not only are there interest deductions, but also depreciation benefits to be aware of. However, investors sometimes get ?phantom income?, this is a type of income which is taxed but it isn?t received as cash. Before you begin investing, you should be knowledgeable about this particular category of income.

TIP! Make sure the property you are interested in has access to utilities. Every business? needs are different, but at a minimum, most businesses will need power, sewer and water services.

Prior to purchasing anything, get together with your tax adviser. A good tax adviser can let you know what percentage of the income will be taxable, and exactly how much the building will cost you. An adviser could even help you find an area with lower taxes.

Interview your prospective real estate broker to determine what they view as failures and successes, to see if their standards match yours. Find out their criteria for deciding whether a result is good or not. Strive to understand the various strategies that they employ. If your own views differ greatly from a potential broker, you two may be incompatible for a business relationship.

Determine the negotiation methods of real estate brokers you are considering. You can ask them how much experience and training they actually have. Look for a broker who always adopt an ethical approach, has values and know where to get good deals. Ask to see the broker?s portfolio. He should be able to provide you examples of successful negotiations. Also ask the broker to give you an example of an unsuccessful negotiation and explain what he learned from the experience.

TIP! You also want to take into consideration the neighborhood that your real estate is in when you purchase commercially. Buying property in an affluent neighborhood is likely to mean that any business which opens there will be successful thanks to having a clientele with a large disposable income.

By now, you should feel comfortable with the fundamentals of business real estate. Make sure you are flexible so that you can always be informed and know what to do in any type of situation. If you do this, you?ll develop an eye for deals that others might pass over, which will make you lots of money over time.

40 still missing in deadly Canada oil train crash

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) ? Hazardous conditions hindered firefighters' attempts Monday to search for some 40 people still missing after a runaway oil tanker train exploded over the weekend, killing at least five people, officials said.

Meanwhile, crews are working to contain 100,000 litres (27,000 gallons) of light crude that spilled from the tankers and has made its way into nearby waterways.

Quebec's Environment Ministry Spokesman Eric Cardinal said special balloons are being used to block the oil from flowing through the sewer system and floating barriers have been set up to stop the oil from heading downstream.

The oil has reached the nearby town of Saint-Georges along the Chaudiere river and there are fears it could flow into the St. Lawrence River all the way to Quebec City.

Cardinal said officials remain hopeful they can contain more than 85 per cent of the spill.

Quebec provincial police Sgt. Benoit Richard said Monday morning there was no searching overnight because the situation remained too dangerous. He said only a small part of the devastated scene has been searched as firefighters made sure all flames were out.

The heart of the town of about 6,000 was leveled in the explosion ? including a pharmacy, library, and a popular bar, Musi-Caf?, where several dozen revelers were believed to have gathered.

Sophie L'Heureux, a manager at the bar, had been working earlier in the night but went home for a rest. She was woken up by the explosion.

L'Heureux said she believed there were about three workers and about 50 people in the bar, including many close friends.

All but one of the train's 73 tanker cars were carrying oil when they somehow came loose early Saturday morning, sped downhill nearly seven miles (11 kilometers) into the town of Lac-Megantic, near the Maine border, and derailed, with at least five of the cars exploding.

The growing number of trains transporting crude oil in Canada and the United States had raised concerns of a major disaster, and this derailment was sure to bolster arguments that a proposed oil pipeline running from Canada across the U.S. would be safer.

"This is an unbelievable disaster," said Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who toured the town Sunday and compared it to a war zone. "This is an enormous area, 30 buildings just completely destroyed, for all intents and purposes incinerated. There isn't a family that is not affected by this."

The train's oil was being transported from North Dakota's Bakken oil region to a refinery in New Brunswick. Because of limited pipeline capacity in the Bakken region and in Canada, oil producers are increasingly using railroads to transport oil to refineries.

The Canadian Railway Association recently estimated that as many as 140,000 carloads of crude oil will be shipped on Canada's tracks this year ? up from 500 carloads in 2009. The Quebec disaster is the fourth freight train accident in Canada under investigation involving crude oil shipments since the beginning of the year.

Harper has called railroad transit "far more environmentally challenging" while trying to persuade the Obama administration to approve the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Greenpeace Canada said Sunday that federal safety regulations haven't kept up with the enormous growth in the shipment of oil by rail.

Officials with the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway said that despite the disaster, they feel transporting oil by rail is safe.

"No matter what mode of transportation you are going to have incidents. That's been proven. This is an unfortunate incident," said Joe McGonigle, Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway's vice president of marketing.

He said the company believes the train's brakes were the cause. "The train was parked, it was tied up. The brakes were secured. Somehow it got loose," he said.

McGonigle said there was no reason to suspect any criminal or terror-related activity.

Wayde Schafer, a North Dakota spokesman for the Sierra Club, has predicted such a catastrophe ever since crude began leaving the North Dakota by rail in 2008.

"I think anybody could have foreseen this," said Schafer, whose downtown Bismarck office is just two blocks from a rail line that carries several mile-long oil trains daily through the heart of the North Dakota's capital city. "It seemed like a disaster waiting to happen and it happened."

8, July 1836: Darwin on St Helena and the Birth of a Volcano

The ?HMS Beagle?, with on board amateur geologist Charles Darwin, arrived at the volcanic island of St Helena July 8, 1836, where it stayed until afternoon of July 14, afterwards proceeding its journey back to Great Britain.

Since Van Diemen?s Land Darwin?s written notes and observations had become very fragmentary ? maybe because of the short stops by the Beagle, maybe due Darwin?s homesickness after four years on sea . However Darwin dedicated 15 pages to the general geology of St Helena (aside his rants about the laundry service on board) and ? what he called ? ?St Helena Model?.

Already on the island of St. Jago a young Darwin had noted geological evidence, suggesting that volcanic island did rise from the sea. Now, after his field experience in South America, Darwin was sure of this idea, as he found again layers formed in the sea exposed along the dry shores of the island:

?The successive sheets are either closely united together, or are separated from each other by beds of scoriaceous rock and of laminate tuff, frequently containing well rounded fragments. The interstices of these beds are filled with gypsum and salt; the gypsum also, sometimes occurring in thin layers. From the large quantity of these two substances, from the presence of rounded pebbles in the tuff, and from the abundant amygdaloids, I cannot doubt that these basal volcanic strata flowed beneath the sea.?
DARWIN (1844)

At Darwin?s time the origin of volcanoes was still a geological riddle. One model ? proposed by the eminent German geologist Leopold von Buch (1774-1835) ? stated that volcanoes form like a bubble on earth?s crust: first geologic forces push up the ground and form a mountain. The peak of this newborn mountain is however unstable and as the summit collapses ? forming a volcanic crater ? magma emerges from the underground, causing a volcanic eruption.? Lava and ash where therefore secondary features of an active (strato-)volcano and not the primary ?construction material? of the entire volcanic mountain. Von Buch?s ?crater of elevation? hypothesis was very popular at the time and shared by most European geologists. Two French geologists, Armand Dufresnoy (1792-1857) and L?once Elie de Beaumont (1798-1874), proved even mathematically that slopes of volcanoes were too steep to be formed by solidified lava flows!

Fig.1. Topographic map of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands), published by von Buch in 1814 in his book ?Description physique des lles Canaries, suivie d?ne indication des principaux volcans du globe?.? Von Buch assumed that the radial valleys were fissures caused by the uprising ?volcanic bubble? ? in fact these valleys are formed by fluvial erosion, but von Buch underestimated in the dry climate of the Canary Islands the power of episodic erosion.

However the ?crater of elevation? model proposed very fast rates of elevation and Darwin, based on his previous observations, had already adopted the gradual geology as proposed by geologist Charles Lyell.

Darwin used the observations on St Helena to formulate an intermediate hypothesis (published in 1844 in his book ?Geological Observations on the volcanic islands and parts of South America visited during the Voyage of H.M.S. ?Beagle?) ? volcanoes rise by slow, gradual and episodic events, finally erupting as proposed by von Buch. He also suggests that to settle the debate it was necessary to carefully determinate the inclination of lava flows. In 1850 Lyell demonstrated on a lava flow of Mount Etna that the lava solidified in situ on the steep slopes ? lava flows were therefore not layers inclined by the rise of the mountain, but repeated deposition of lava flows on the slopes formed the entire volcano:

??we must abandon the elevation-crater hypothesis: for although one cone of eruption may envelop and bury another cone of eruption, it is impossible for a cone of upheaval to mantle round and overwhelm another cone of upheaval so as to reduce the whole mass to one conical mountain.? Lyell in his monographic work ??On the Structure of Lavas which have consolidated on Steep Slopes: with Remarks on the Mode of Origin of Mount Etna and on the Theory of ?Craters of Elevation?, published in 1858.

In the end a volcanic eruption in the Mediterranean Sea will confirm the model as proposed by Lyell and (with some reluctance) supported by Darwin- in 1831 naturalists, on board of the ship ?Etna?, experienced the birth of the island of ?Ferdinandea?, observing that repeated eruptions and deposition of lava and ash were slowly forming a new mountain.

Rugby Union: Gatland?s already looking to 2017 British and Irish Lions tour

Warren Gatland believes the British and Irish Lions could be equipped with ?an incredibly strong squad? for the formidable challenge of tackling New Zealand in four years? time.

It is 42 years since the Lions won a Test series in All Blacks country, but they might easily travel with renewed optimism when 2017 comes around.

Not only did the current Lions triumph at Australia?s expense, claiming a 2-1 series success, they achieved it with a crop of exciting young players ? stars like Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Alex Corbisiero, Sam Warburton, Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau.

And when the planning begins for New Zealand, it will start from a solid base of world-class talent.

Asked if he thought the Lions could prevail in 2017, current Lions boss Gatland said: ?Yes, I think if we get things right in terms of the preparation and stuff.

?If you look at how young this squad is, a lot of them could be around in four years? time.

?If they are playing well enough and you have got four more years? experience on some young heads, some young shoulders and they are in their late 20s, that potentially makes the Lions squad in four years? time incredibly strong.

?That is something to be excited about. The amount of interest it has created, I am sure the sponsors are pretty happy and the people who are involved in negotiating things for the future of the Lions. You?ve always got to believe that when you go somewhere you go there to win.

?I know we talk about 2005 (New Zealand) being disappointing, and for us the motivation in 2009 (South Africa) was about respect and getting respect back for that jersey.

?The whole focus on this tour was about delivering the Test series win.?

Gatland came in for fierce criticism from all quarters for his third-Test selection, one that contained 10 Welshmen, but no Brian O?Driscoll, who was left out of the 23.

But he revealed an experience he gained while coaching Ireland several years ago gave him an unshakeable belief in how he should approach selection.

?If we had won the series, fantastic. If we had lost, there would only be fingers pointed at myself,? he added.

?We lost an away game to Scotland which cost Ireland a Grand Slam. Tactically, I changed the way we played, influenced by some selections.

?I promised myself I would never do that again, that I would never back down from what I felt would be the right decision.

?On 50-50 calls, sometimes you can be swayed by other coaches, but when you really believe deep down it?s the right decision you have got to back yourself 100 per cent.

?I would rather make what I thought was the right decision, rather than have any regrets afterwards.?

Meanwhile Lions tour manager Andy Irvine wants to see changes to the schedule of future tours.

He said: ?The one thing I would say ? and I passionately believe in this ? is that the scheduling is all wrong.

?We, as a (Lions) board did our damnedest to give Warren more time.

?It is absolutely bonkers that you have a Rabo final and an Aviva final 48 hours before you fly out.

?Believe me, we tried as hard as we could to change that.

?I am not sure if we can change it in four years? time, but thereafter, once the SANZAR agreement (the touring deal between the Lions and Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) comes up for negotiation, make no mistake, our boys will get more time with the players.

?They have to, because it is unfair on the coaches and the players.

?There is a legally-binding contract in place.

?Unless both parties agree to changing that contract, you can?t break it. We are powerless to break it, unless we have the agreement of the New Zealand Rugby Union, or alternatively, the clubs back home.

?You try to persuade the Premiership clubs to move their final, or try to persuade ERC (European Rugby Cup) to move their final.

?If you can do it, you are a better man than me.

?We can?t force them to do it. We?ve offered them money and tried to impress upon them how important Lions tours are.

?What we did this year was give the lads an extra two weeks? training, and only the ones involved in the two finals didn?t attend training.

?That was 13 or 14 of them, but Gats would tell you that the preparation this time was better than it was in 2009,? added former Scotland star Irvine.

Election-related killing reported in Mexico

At least one person has died in election-related violence Sunday in Mexico, where 15 states are holding gubernatorial, legislative and mayoral elections, officials said.

Ramon Delgado Valencia was killed when unidentified individuals fired shots at the campaign headquarters of Reveriano Perez Vega, the mayoral candidate of the governing Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, in Coxquihui, a city in the Gulf state of Veracruz, officials told Efe.

The attack occurred around 9:00 a.m. in Coxquihui, where one person was killed and three others were wounded in a shootout on June 17.

Delays in the opening of election precincts were reported in numerous cities across Mexico.

The biggest office up for grabs on Sunday is the governorship of the northwestern state of Baja California, a post that the PRI lost in 1989.

Conservative National Action Party, or PAN, chairman Gustavo Madero said he was unable to vote because of a "trick" that involved moving his election precinct in Chihuahua City to "a false address."

"They padlocked and chained the precinct where he was supposed to go and put up a change-of-location sign with a false address," the PAN said in a statement on its Web site that included a video showing Madero trying to enter the closed building.

Some 30 million Mexicans are eligible to vote in the elections and nearly 1,800 offices in 14 states are up for grabs.

A total of 1,348 mayoralties and more than 400 state legislative seats will be in play in the elections, which are being held in Aguascalientes, Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz and Zacatecas states. EFE

NYC?s race for mayor heats up

ASTORIA, QUEENS (PIX11) ? With a little more than two months left until the New York primaries, mayoral heavyweights blanketed the boroughs this weekend.

Current City Council Speaker Christine Quinn spoke to voters at the North Shore Towers in Queens.

While former MTA Chair and Republican candidate Joe Lhota held a press conference on the Brighton Beach Boardwalk.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio held a meet and greet outside Prospect Park.

de Blasio says from now until the September 10th primary he expects long days filled with campaigning.

?There?s going to be a lot of 15 and 18 hour days and I think the fact is this is how you win,? he said.

Some of the candidates say making public appearances and actually shaking hands is the best way to connect with voters.

But for those who?ve spent more time in front of the cameras, like Anthony Weiner, face to face meetings are a chance to push their platforms directly to voters.

?It?s something, particularly in communities like this, that are the same type of middle class aspirational communities that I?m fighting for in this campaign,? Weiner said.

Voters in Astoria say as the election grows closer, they expect to see more candidates at events like this one. But ultimately they say shaking a candidates hand isn?t going to make or break their vote for mayor.

?I think what?s most important is what they believe and what they say,? resident Uwvie Obodo said.

And of course, that they follow through on both.

The Highway: A short story.

I am walking along the highway.

I don?t remember how I got to be here. The first thing I can recall is blinking. Or maybe waking up. I?m not sure. I just opened my eyes and took a step. Then another, then another.

I know I must be dreaming. I?ve been walking for hours. The sun hasn?t moved at all. There is no wind. No clouds. No cars on the road. The only sound I hear is the soles of my boots thumping lightly on the pavement. Occasionally, I hear a small piece of gravel crunch underfoot. It is the middle of summer, July 9th, as a matter of fact. At least, that was the date before I went to sleep.

I don?t understand the significance of this dream. It doesn?t make any sense to me. What could it possibly mean? Perhaps it represents the road of every man?s life. A journey of one?s soul?
I find the idea laughable.

The only journey my soul has ever taken has been the hard road of life. A smoker, in my youth. The occasional drink. Perhaps more than occasional. But I left that all behind before I turned twenty-five. Alright, I?ll be honest. I smoked a pack and a half a day, and I never let the sun go down without polishing off a six-pack. Or three.

But, as I said, I left that all behind. It was hard, but I dropped all of it when I met her. Never lit up again, never cracked open another cold one. And that is the truth.

Evelyn Boroughs. What a woman. Hair like fire, eyes like emeralds. The day I met her, she slapped me for public intoxication. Okay, she didn?t slap me. She slugged me across the jaw. One hit, knocked me to the ground. She woke me up by dumping a bucket of water on my face, then cuffed me and stuffed me in a patrol car.

Yeah, that?s right. She was a cop.

With a nasty hangover and a cellmate that liked to yell at the top of his lung, I sat in a cell. She brought the two of us our food that evening, and I got my first alcohol-free look at her.

I realize that some idiotic romantics would call it ?love at first sight?. I don?t believe in that crap. I just knew I would do whatever it took to be with her.

She was one of those old-fashioned types. You know the sort. Didn?t drink, didn?t smoke, never did drugs, saved herself for marriage, the whole bit.

Took me three years to prove I?d changed my ways. Another two years to get her to fall in love in me. Then one more before we got married.

I stayed true. Not a drop to drink, not a single cigarette.

When we got the news, she told me she wished she?d married me four years earlier. We only had a year and a half before she was diagnosed. Yeah, you guessed it. The big C.

Another year and she was gone.

Do you see the irony in it? Here I was, smoked most of my life, drank like a fish, and I was perfectly healthy. Then there was my Evie. She lived clean every day she was alive, and cancer somehow found her number. Ain?t that a kick in the head?

I can tell you, I wanted to get drunk. I wanted to drown it all. But I couldn?t. She wouldn?t have wanted me to.

See? No ground-breaking, soul-searching journey. Just the same bullcrap everyone goes through. We fall in love, we suffer heartbreak, we live, we die. Almost seems none nothing in life was ever meant to make sense.

So, yeah, how does this dream have anything to do with my life?s ?journey?? Fact is, it doesn?t. Must be something I ate.

Hm. Exit 23 is just up ahead. Leads to the overpass. Weird thing is, the overpass is sheered off, stopping in mid-air. No rubble below, no broken concrete or twisted reinforcement bar. It looks like they built it to end like that. Now I know for certain I?m dreaming. I drive on that overpass every day on the way to work, and it wasn?t like that yesterday.

I know I?ve been walking for what seems like forever, but I haven?t even broken a sweat. Even on my way up the exit ramp, I don?t feel tired in the least.

I kinda wish Evie was here in my dream. She?d have loved it. Taking long walks was her big thing. It was how she relaxed. Didn?t matter much where, just so long as it was on foot. She was always able to con me into walking with her. Didn?t seem to matter that re-runs of the Dukes of Hazard were on. She could tear me away from my favorite show without hardly any effort. Next thing you know, I?d be taking walking beside her, through the park, along old trails in the woods, along the busy streets of the city. Wherever the mood took her, I was dragged along for the trip.

I?m not complaining, though. I wasn?t much for walking myself, but I was all for spending time with her. A lot of men only have one thing on their minds when it comes to women. Not saying that sort of thing never passed through mine, but Evie wasn?t just a warm body to me. She was . . . Well, now that I think about it, it really sounds cliche, even cheesy. But she was my world. She was everything.

Good grief, how long is this ramp? Seems like it?s taking me forever to get to the end of it. Not sure why, but I kind of want to see what it looks like up there.

Anyway, where was I?

Oh, yeah. Evie.

You know, we only took one vacation together. It was the week after she was diagnosed. I guess we both just needed to get away from it all. We went to the Grand Canyon. She wanted me to see what it was like, and she knew I?d never make the trip without her. Traveling just wasn?t something I care a great deal for. But I?m glad she talked me into it. If you?ve never been there, you should go, provided you ever get the chance.

I don?t have the words to describe what it was like. I wasn?t born a poet. The best I can come up with is an un-inspiring ?Wow?. Sometimes I?ll add an appreciative whistle to it, but that?s about it.

Of course, she wanted to walk every bit of it. And we did walk quite a bit. But she was already starting to tire easy. Really tore the heart out of my chest. By the time our vacation was over, I was glad to be back home. Made me feel a little more in control.

But it?s all an illusion, really. I mean, who among us is ever really in control? You? Me? The government? Ha! That?s a laugh. None of us control a single thing. Not now, not ever. That?s what I?ve learned in my life.

Almost there. I sure am curious about how this overpass is staying up like that, even if it?s not real. I?m like that. I like to know how things work. Maybe I?ll read up on how dreams work when I wake up. Assuming I can even remember the dream. I usually can?t.

Kinda funny, that. You go to sleep, you imagine these things that seem so utterly, absolutely profound, then you wake up and you can?t even recall the smallest detail in the dream. I think Evie would?ve gotten a kick outta that. Then again, maybe not. She had an unpredictable sense of humor. It was an adventure every day to try to figure out what she would laugh at. There was one day, I kid you not, she told me this joke about a pirate with a pet carrot. Yeah, you heard right. Not parrot. Carrot. As in, the orange-colored root that Bug Bunny eats. A pirate with a pet carrot. It was the dumbest joke I?d ever heard, but it had her in stitches. I memorized the thing, word for word. When I repeated it to her the next day, (perfectly, I might add), she just shrugged like it was boring. I tell you, I?ll never understand women.

God, Evie, I miss you.

Okay, now this dream is just getting weird. The end of the overpass is cut smooth, like a giant razor blade sliced through it. Huh. That?s cool. When I tap my foot on the edge, it still feels solid, like the rest of the overpass is there, I just can?t see it. I wonder what would happen if . . .

Whoa . . .

Never dreamed anything like this before. I?m not on the pavement at all anymore. I?m walking on the air. And I?m still climbing upward. I wonder how far up this will take me before I wake up?

The view is outstanding. I can see the highway stretching out for miles and miles. In fact, I can see so far out that I can see the curve of the horizon. The visible part of the overpass is getting farther and farther away. Almost feels like I?m rushing away from it, but I?m not moving my feet any faster.

I?d heard of people having dreams of being able to fly, but this doesn?t feel like what they?d described. This is something else entirely. And it feels so real in a lot of ways.

I?m really moving now. Seems like each step is taking up more distance than the last one. Feels like I?m taking steps nearly fifty feet at a time now.

You know that thing you hear folks say in movies? About people on the ground looking like ants? I know what they mean now. The highway is barely more than dark lines way down there. Weird thing is, I?m kind of acrophobic. But I?m not afraid in the least. I?ll bet no one with a hang glider ever reached this altitude.

That?s something Evie never got to do. She always talked a lot about going hang gliding someday, but she wouldn?t go alone and she knew about my fear of heights. Sometimes I think I held her back too much. She was pretty out-going and athletic, always trying something new. She even talked me into going to one of those indoor rock-climbing places. That?s how she found out about my acrophobia. She joked about finding a cure fore it someday, but she never teased me about it.

I know it?s just a dream, but it feels like the air is getting thin up here. Heh. I wonder if I?ll be able to walk straight out into space? Guess I?ll find out, assuming I don?t wake up first.

Whoa! Looks like I found the end of the ramp. The wind is rushing by on my way down, roaring in my ears. Won?t be walking into space this way. This must be what skydiving feels like. Well, except for not having the helmet. Or the goggles. Or the parachute. Mostly the parachute.

Man, I thought I was making good time climbing.

That?s not right. The sun was high in the sky just a few seconds ago. Now it?s dipping toward the horizon. Symbolism, maybe? Moving toward the end of the dream?

What was that? A bird? And I think I see something . . . Wait, that?s the highway there, and those streaks of light . . . Those are cars moving along it. The ground is coming at me fast. Too fast.

Oh, God. It?s not a dream. It?s not a . . .

?And in our final story this evening, local man Jeffrey Shore jumped from the overpass off of Exit 23. Though we do not yet have confirmation about the details, police believe that his actions were suicide. We were able to learn that today, July 10th, is the one year anniversary of his wife?s death, the late Officer Evelyn Boroughs Shore, who passed away after a short battle with cancer."

"Police found no evidence of drug or alcohol use in Mr. Shore?s death. No suicide note has been recovered at this time, but we do know that Mr. Shore had been seeing Dr. Charles Boden, a local psychiatrist, in relation to depression. Mr. Shore is survived by his brother, James Shore, and by his sister, Katherine Wade."

"Thank you for tuning in to Channel 9 News at 10. We?ll be back at 6:30 tomorrow morning. We hope to see you then. Good night."

Live cricket India vs West Indies: 312-run target for WI

Team India posted a huge total of 311 runs at the loss of seven wickets after 50 overs against West Indies.

Skipper Virat Kohli (102) hit a fighting century as India overcame mid-innings wobbles to post a challenging 311 in a crucial cricket tri-series match in Port of Spain (Trinidad) on Friday, July 5.

?Openers Shikhar Dhawan (69) and Rohit Sharma (46) laid a strong foundation with their 123-run stand and Kohli ensured that their hard work does not go waste as he made up for the failure of the middle-order with his gritty knock.

Live cricket scorecard: India vs West Indies

MATCH PREVIEW

After two consecutive defeats, Team India is playing host West Indies in the must win game of tri-series on Friday.

In the absence of regular skipper MS Dhoni, standing captain Virat Kohli will have to regroup the entire team against West Indies, who are eying final berth with a win here.

The same squad, who lifted the recently concluded Champions Trophy, is looking vulnerable as the young Indian players found it tough to come to terms with the challenging conditions.
After losing the close game against West Indies, Men in Blue looked miserable against Sri Lanka in their last game.

The major challenge before Kohli is to win this game with huge margin to keep their chances alive in the tournament.

As if the two-paced Caribbean wickets were not enough to trouble the Indians, injury to charismatic skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has only made the job tough for them.

Friday's contest comes as a huge challenge and test for the leadership quality of Virat Kohli, who is being considered as a future captain of the country.

Kohli's tactics during the big-defeat against Sri Lanka did not work and it will be interesting to see how he leads the young pack in the pressure match, where a defeat will virtually ensure their elimination.

West Indies are best placed so far with nine points, courtesy two wins from as many matches while Sri Lanka are second with five points. Both the teams have managed to win a bonus point.

A victory on Friday will keep India alive in the competition. Their defeat would send the hosts into the final and from there, India's chances to qualify for the final will depend on a lot of ifs and buts.

First and foremost, India would need a favour from the West Indies that the hosts beat Sri Lanka in their final league match on Sunday and then India will have to beat the Asian neighbours on Tuesday in a certain number of overs to make it to the summit clash.

India's victory on Friday will keep the tournament open as all three teams will have a chance to book a place in the title clash.

Considering the grim situation, India need stroke-maker Shikhar Dhawan to yet again provide a solid opening along with Rohit Sharma, who is the only one so far from the side to score a half-century.

In the first two matches, their partnership has not gone beyond five overs. It's crucial that the two batsmen click as India thrives on good starts.

The players are in form and they need to apply better according to conditions. The bowlers struggled to find length against Sri Lanka and repeat of the same will be suicidal against the big-hitting Caribbean players.

Chris Gayle is always a big threat and his opening partner Johnson Charles has also given a good account of himself. Kieron Pollard in the middle and Darren Sammy in the lower order are also capable of taking the game away from the opposition on their day.

India may leave out Shami Ahmed and bring back Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. It is also unlikely that Ambati Rayudu will get his debut match in the crucial game.

For West Indies, captain Dwayne Bravo is likely to come back to side, having missed the India match due to a groin strain.

Teams (from):

India: Virat Kohli (Capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Ambati Rayudu, Murali Vijay, Shami Ahmed and R Vinay Kumar.

West Indies: Dwayne Bravo (Capt.), Tino Best, Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, Chris Gayle, Jason Holderm, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, and Devon Smith.

Microsoft dumps Xbox Live Arcade Points with next update

Microsoft is abandoning its traditional e-commerce system for its popular online gaming and entertainment platform Xbox Live Arcade in time for the next schedule Xbox 360 dashboard update, the company revealed Friday.

After irritating gamers for nearly a decade with its requirement to buy digital goods with "Microsoft Points" rather than real-world currency, Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) is laying its points system to rest both for the Xbox 360 and the upcoming Xbox One console.

Previously, gamers wanting to purchase anything on XBLA had to first purchase a batch of Microsoft points ? say, 1,600 points for $19.99 ? with which they could then actually buy a game. This system invariably led to an imperfect overlap between the amount of points needed to buy something and the amount sitting around in a given XBLA account afterwards, leading to complaints that the service was generally inefficient and unnecessarily costly.

Larry Hryb, Xbox Live's director of programming who's better known by his online moniker "Major Nelson," announced the shift on Friday in a post on his blog about the upcoming open beta testing period scheduled for the next Xbox 360 dashboard update.

"It [the 2013 Xbox Live Update for Xbox 360 Public Beta] will include updates to improve overall performance and the ability to conduct transactions with local currency, as Microsoft Points will be retired later this year," Hryb wrote.

Hryb didn't say when the final update would be released to the general gaming public. Microsoft first announced that it was retiring its points system for XBLA e-commerce during its press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles.

Hryb also didn't clarify how, exactly, Microsoft is planning to deal with any leftover Microsoft points after the e-commerce solution is officially abandoned for Xbox Live. We've reached to Microsoft for comment and will update this story as more information becomes available.

The 'Big Brother' Cast is Horribly Racist & Horribly Sexist

When your entire life is being broadcast to the world 24-7, your true colors tend to show. That's what's happening to the new cast of Big Brother -- and those colors are ugly indeed. Those who are watching the live feed of Big Brother 15 have witnessed a shocking torrent of racism, sexist and homophobia. And it's not just a token obnoxious cast member, like The Real World's Puck (are we showing our age?). It's seven people. That's 7 out of 16. Basically, the house is the college dorm from hell.

iOS 7 preview: Camera

iOS 7 preview: Camera

iOS 7 Camera brings an all-new interface, along with a new Square photo mode, and a bevy of new, real-time Filters.

The Camera app has gotten the same objectified and gamified makeover as the rest of iOS 7, but Apple also managed to sneak in a few new features as well. First is, um,Square mode. The second is Filters. The bigger news, however, is what was taken away, including the signature shutter animation and button treatments are gone.

Here's how Apple describes it:

Camera in iOS 7 puts all your shooting formats ? still, video, panorama, and now square ? front and center. With a swipe, you can capture what you want the way you want.1 Fast. And new filters let you do even more with each image. Give it a retro feel. Dial up the contrast. Or go black and white. Artistic license is all yours.

And for developers:

Let your users capture and compose photos and videos just the way they want. Capture video at 60fps, so you can replay dramatic scenes in slow motion. Get a closer look by directly controlling the zoom level of the camera. Create video effects and transitions by combining multiple video tracks using the custom video compositing APIs. Scan and recognize barcodes with the camera.

Based on what we've seen so far, here's how the new Camera looks, and the new features appear to work:

  • There's still a quick-access slider on the Lock screen, though now it competes for that gesture with Control Center and unless Apple changes it, that could cause some confusion or collision.

  • Like the rest of the iOS 7 makeover, Apple seems to have kept controls spatially consistent, so the flash button, front/rear-facing selector, and shutter button, for example, look to be in the same places as they were on iOS 6. The Options button, however, seems to be gone, with HDR moving down to sit atop the shutter button, and the grid button... currently MIA?

  • The video toggle and panorama button have likewise moved, to an all new slider control that starts you off on Photo, lets you slide to the left for Video, and slide to the right for Square (think Instagram), and Panorama. The interface for Panorama looks largely unchanged from iOS 6.

  • Taking a photo in iOS 7 looks to be lightning fast. Absent the shutter animation, which may once have covered lag in the original iPhone camera, it appears to be almost instant now. You take your shot and it gets took.

  • Switching between modes looks to invoke a real-time blur effect, not dissimilar to those seen elsewhere in iOS 7. It makes for a dynamic, though likely computationally expensive transition.

  • The new filters feature sits to the right of the camera shutter button, on the opposite side of the Camera Roll preview tile. Filter effects appear to be live, though they seem limited to Photos and Square, and not available to Video or Panorama. Mono, Tonal, Noir, Fade, Chrome, Process, Transfer, and Instant are the filters shown off the date.

The Camera interface, originally designed by no less than Mike Matas and shown off by Steve Jobs on the very first iPhone in 2007, was delightful, but 6 years later it's earned its visual refresh.

The addition of the new square mode and the new filters highlight the immense influence of Instagram on mobile photography. I don't mind it. When not using Instagram I've still had the urge to square-cut photos, and having to do it in post with the crop tool was slow.

The filters, however, are far more subtle than Instagram's. There appear to be three types of black and white, one desaturated, one over saturated, and three that tint towards blue, red, and green respectively. Nothing blown out, nothing vignetted, and nothing overly dramatic. Depending on your tastes, that's either a huge negative, or a huge plus. I've wanted Apple to co-opt filtering for a while now, given how many other apps were piling on the feature. Whether this helps calm that down, or only spur it on further remains to be seen.

Worth noting, there's no tilt-shift, no frame or border effects, and no sliders for controlling the amount of filter added, at least not that Apple's shown off so far.

The speed of picture taking, if it holds up in real-world use, is amazing. Other platforms have been pushing the speed limits for a while now, and it's fantastic Apple's bringing the same attention and optimization to their software as they've been doing with their hardware for a while now. It'll be interesting to see what the next generation iPhone can do with it.

I do miss the grid dearly, however. Hopefully it's still there and we just haven't seen it yet. But as someone who still wants to be able to visually refer to the rule of thirds at times, if it's gone, it'll be a step backwards for me. There also doesn't seem to be any provision for more advanced photographers; no expert mode. That's not Apple's style, however, so it'll remain the providence of third-party camera apps, and with the new APIs in iOS7, hey could also get a welcome boost.

The updated Camera app will ship as part of iOS 7 this fall. Check out the resources below for more, and let me know - are the square mode and filters filters, along with its new look, enough for Apple's next generation?

A lucky contest winner gets his OUYA on

OUYA

OUYA consoles are shipping out rapidly, and our very own contest winner has received his unit

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, we held a contest to pick our Android Central user name for the OUYA service.  We rounded up all the entries and picked a winner -- glazedfaith came through with the name LloydOfTheRings -- and it was all finished except the waiting.

The wait's over, and glazedfaith has received his OUYA! Like a true gracious winner, he's taken the time to thank us for holding up our end and getting the OUYA console out to him as soon as they could be shipped.

On behalf of all of us here, you're welcome glazedfaith. We hope you enjoy the heck out of the OUYA, and keep sharing your experiences with it. The best part about working here is knowing that folks like you are out there and appreciate what we do.

Everyone head into the forums and check out the pictures, and hopefully glazedfaith can give us some real-world user impressions of the OUYA while he puts it through the paces.
