Wave of attacks kill at least 44 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Insurgents killed at least 44 people in a wave of attacks against Iraqi security forces on Sunday, gunning down soldiers at an army post and bombing police recruits waiting in line to apply for jobs, officials said.

The violence, which struck at least 11 cities and also wounded nearly 240 people, highlighted militant attempts to sow havoc in the country and undermine the government.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks but security forces are a frequent target of al-Qaida's Iraq branch, which has vowed to reassert itself and take back areas it was forced from before U.S. troops withdrew from the country last year.

In Sunday's deadliest attack, gunmen stormed a small Iraqi Army outpost in the town of Dujail before dawn, killing at least 10 soldiers and wounding eight more, according to police and hospital officials in the nearby city of Balad, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information.

Hours later, a car bomb struck a group of police recruits waiting in line to apply for jobs with the state-run Northern Oil Co. outside the northern city of Kirkuk. City police commander Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir said seven recruits were killed and 17 wounded. He said all the recruits were Sunni Muslims and blamed the early morning attack on al-Qaida, but did not provide details.

The carnage even stretched into the country's south, where bombs stuck to two parked cars exploded in the Shiite-dominated city of Nasiriyah, 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Baghdad. The blasts were near the French consulate and a local hotel in the city, although the consulate did not appear to be a target of the attack.

Local deputy health director Dr. Adnan al-Musharifawi said two people were killed and three were wounded at the hotel, and one Iraqi policeman was wounded at the consulate. Al-Musharifawi said no French diplomats were among the casualties.

Al-Qaida's Iraq franchise, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq, has for years had a hot-and-cold relationship with the global terror network's leadership. The two shared the goal of targeting the U.S. military in Iraq and, to an extent, undermining the Shiite government that replaced Saddam Hussein's regime.

But al-Qaida leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri distanced themselves from the Iraqi militants in 2007 because their attacks also killed Iraqi civilians instead of focusing on Western targets.

A string of smaller attacks Sunday also struck nine other cities, including Baghdad.

In the capital's eastern Shiite neighborhood of Husseniyah, roadside bombs killed a policeman and a passer-by, security and health officials said. Another eight people ? including four soldiers ? were wounded, the officials said.

The rest of the attacks were car bombs that hit cities stretching from the southern port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest, to the city of Tal Afar northwest of Baghdad near the Syrian border.

The blast in Basra killed three people and wounded 24, while the bomb in Tal Afar killed two passers-by and wounded seven, officials said.

A pair of car bombs in southern Maysan province killed five people and wounded 40 outside a Shiite shrine to Imam Ail al-Sharqi, said the holy site's director, Ammar Abdullah.

A roadside bomb in Taji, just north of Baghdad, left two passers-by dead and 11 injured, and explosions in the Sunni towns of Hawija and Ar Riyad, outside the flashpoint city of Kirkuk north of Baghdad, wounded seven people.

In Tuz Khormato near the city of Kirkuk, some 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb outside of a market killed four and wounded 41 people, said Salahuddin provincial health director Raeed Ibrahim. And in Kirkuk itself, Qadir said three midmorning explosions ? two car bombs and a roadside bomb ? killed seven and wounded about 70.

Kirkuk has been a flashpoint for years with its mix of Sunni Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all claim rights to the city and the oil-rich land that surrounds it.

Kurdish leaders long have sought to draw Kirkuk into their self-rule region of Iraq's three northernmost provinces, and have pushed for a census to determine the city's ethnic majority. But the majority Arab central government in Baghdad has delayed the census, which could incite widespread ethnic violence over Kirkuk's future.

After they each parred the par-4 18th hole eight times in a playoff Sunday, darkness forced the suspension of play for the day. They will resume play Monday morning on the par-4 16th hole.

Both were willing to try to play a ninth extra hole Sunday.

"It's hard when it's just us two and trying to make a decision," Creamer said. "I respect what she wants, and she respects what I want. It's difficult. I said, 'Well, let's go back to the tee and see.' And then we talked about it a little bit, and we were like, 'OK, let's just play.' I teed it up, and it was like, 'Oh, my goodness.' My (white-headed) driver was brighter than the golf ball sitting down there, and I'm thinking this probably isn't a good idea. I looked at Jiyai, and Jiyai said, 'No.'"

The longest playoff in LPGA history is 10 holes.

Creamer took a one-stroke lead into the final hole of regulation, but three-putted ? missing a 5-footer for par ? for a bogey to fall into the playoff. Creamer finished with an even-par 71, and Shin shot a 69, leaving them tied at 16 under on Kingsmill's River Course.

They had already missed their flight to England for the Women's British Open.

"I don't think I said anything to (her caddie) Colin (Cann) until I think the seventh playoff hole," Creamer said. "I said, 'I don't think we're going to make our charter.' He said, 'No, I don't think so. It leaves in 20 minutes or something.' It wasn't like we were thinking British, British, British, but yeah, we want to get there, too."

The winner will extend Kingsmill's major champion vibe. All previous LPGA Tour winners at Kingsmill have won majors. Creamer won the 2010 U.S. Women's Open, and Shin captured the 2008 Women's British Open. Both players have gone more than two years without an LPGA Tour victory.

Shin had a good chance to win on the first extra hole, but left a 6-foot birdie putt short. Both players came tantalizingly close to winning on the second playoff hole. Both got up and down for pars from bunkers on the third hole, and each two-putted for par the fourth, fifth and sixth extra holes.

Creamer sank a 5-foot putt to save par and extend the playoff on the seventh, and both two-putted the eighth time.

"It's tough to make a birdie with that back pin location, and we're hitting it in the same spot," Creamer said. "It's unfortunate that we couldn't change the pin or do something a little bit different."

Karine Icher (65) and Danielle Kang (69) tied for third at 14 under. Angela Stanford had a 64 ? the best round of the day ? match Catriona Matthew (68) at 13 under.

Creamer began the round with a two-shot lead over Shin. The American maintained that margin with birdies on the second and fourth holes, then had a double bogey on the sixth. That ended a streak of 38 holes without losing a shot and dropped her into a tie at 16 under with Shin, who birdied the second and third holes.

They made the turn tied, but Shin bogeyed the 10th and 11th holes to again trail by two. Icher, Matthew and Ai Miyazato entered the mix after starting well behind Creamer, but Icher ran out of holes, and Matthew and Miyazato made bogeys that took them out of the hunt.

Creamer and Shin battled shot for shot from the 12th hole on. Shin closed within a shot when Creamer bogeyed the 12th, then Creamer kept her lead with a brilliant up and down for par at the 13th.

Creamer birdied Nos. 14 and 16, and Shin birdied 15 and 16 to stay a stroke back.

Over the weekend, US officials announced that the US had suspended training for Afghan police recruits in order to vet existing members as insider attacks grow more common:?Afghan troops have killed at least 45 foreign troops so far this year.

The future of Afghan security increasingly rests on the shoulders of Afghan troops as they slowly assume security responsibility from foreign forces. But clashing military cultures and the resulting misunderstandings and frustrations raise questions about the success of the transition.

?US forces have been placed in an extremely difficult situation,? says Seth Jones, a senior analyst at the RAND Corporation and former senior adviser to US Special Operations in Afghanistan. ?They are being asked to quickly train and mentor Afghan forces in a situation where they are withdrawing but the war is far from over.?

According to the Congressional Research Service, more than half of the US foreign assistance to Afghanistan goes into training the Afghan military and police. At a summit in Chicago in May, NATO member states pledged their support for a force of 228,500 with an estimated annual budget of $4.1 billion. There are currently 350,000 Afghan soldiers and police battling the ongoing insurgency.

Frustration?

At Combat Outpost Zormat in Paktia Province this summer, a general sense of frustration has set in among most troops.

?That?s all we are ? big brothers with guns making sure that the big bully doesn?t beat up our little brothers on their way to school,? says Staff Sgt. Anderson, describing the attitude of many soldiers in his company.?

Despite such frustration, many soldiers point out both the gradual progress as well as the ambiguity in dealing with Afghan Security Forces. According to a US corporal, ?It?s hit and miss with the Afghan National Army. There are some good units, and then there are some units who run at the first shot.?

Afghan National Army units engaged in continuous skirmishes with the Taliban are better trained and disciplined than units stationed in more secure areas, he says. ?The ANA in hot areas are solid. They know that they have to fight or die.?

Brothers

Still, there are examples of successful cooperation among Afghan soldiers with US troops.

?US and Afghan soldiers are brothers,? says Afghan Maj. Mohammad Jan, commander of an Afghan company near the town of Kaligu.

Jan has experience with another great power that came to Afghanistan: He studied at Moscow?s military academy and fought in the Soviet-trained Army in the 1980s and early '90s. Jan pointed out that the biggest difference between US and Soviet advisers is that the Soviets insisted on doing their missions on their own.

Protein critical to gut lining repair identified

ScienceDaily (Sep. 6, 2012) ? Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have identified a protein essential to repairing the intestine's inner lining.

That lining is among the body's busiest highways, trod not only by the food we ingest but also by trillions of microorganisms that aid digestion. Because the intestine plays key roles in absorbing nutrients and containing the microbes, any damage must be fixed promptly.

The researchers report Sept. 6 in Science Express that a protein called Wnt5a is essential for reconstructing glands in the intestinal lining. The glands, called crypts of Lieberk?hn, contain stem cells that continually pump out other cells that renew the gut lining, which is replaced every two to four weeks. The crypts look like dimples in the gut lining and are vulnerable to damage and loss from infection and inflammation.

"For example, inflammatory bowel disease can destroy huge stretches of the lining, including the crypts," says senior author Thaddeus Stappenbeck, MD, PhD, associate professor of pathology and immunology. "If crypts can't be repaired as the lining is rebuilt, their absence would place substantial stresses on crypts in healthy portions of the gut. So it's important to better understand how the crypts are replaced."

In the new study, Stappenbeck and his colleagues showed that when crypts are lost to injury in mice, the nearest surviving crypts expand into the damaged area and create an array of channels. These wound channels, which contain rapidly dividing stem cells, eventually subdivide into new crypts.

Stappenbeck found that cells that line the outer wall of the gut migrate to sites of damage within the inner lining to provide Wnt5a, a signaling molecule that stops stem cells from dividing. This shutdown triggers the formation of dimples in the wound channels that become new crypts.

Because mice that lack the Wnt5a gene aren't viable, co-author Terry Yamaguchi, PhD, of the National Cancer Institute, bred mice in which scientists could selectively turn off the gene after the mice became adults. When the gut lining was injured and Wnt5a was disabled, the wound channels formed but failed to divide into crypts.

To further confirm the link between the gene and crypt repair, Hiroyuki Miyoshi, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in Stappenbeck's laboratory, devised a robust method for growing gut stem cells in test tubes. When he applied Wnt5a to the stem cells, they stopped dividing, proving that the protein was the critical ingredient for initiating crypt formation.

The scientists also showed that Wnt5a activated a signaling pathway in the stem cells that is known to stop cell proliferation. Stappenbeck, who also is an associate professor of developmental biology, is now planning additional studies of Wnt5a, including investigations of whether the protein plays similar roles elsewhere in the body.

"We're also very curious about what causes the outer lining of the gut to send cells that make Wnt5a into the inner lining of the gut, because that's not something we've seen previously," he says. "Our best theory so far is that when this happens, the body may be reactivating a pathway it uses to construct the gut early in development."

Other researchers have identified the Wnt5a protein in tumors, suggesting it may play a role in cancer. Scientists don't know what that role is, but the new mouse model Yamaguchi developed may help solve the mystery.
